This hat has blended into many memories of a departed friend. Anne Nicol wanted me to have this hat after she died. I smile every time I wear it, remembering her.

My gardeners’ hat

This stained and tattered gardeners’ hat shared 16 years with me in the Herbal Gem’s Garden of Spur Ridge. This hat and I worked hard together in the ever-changing weather of Texas to share herbs and edible flowers with restaurants and private clubs. It was my habit to pray for the chief’s that would receive these new and exciting culinary flavors into their restaurants. This old hat seemed to listen and guard those prayers with me. Each night, while putting my prayers on paper, I was reminded of the blessings we had received that day. This was the beginning of a prayer journal to be entitled “ Hearti culture”. Understanding that the word horticulture is the science or art of growing plants and the cultivation of the soil. Heart iculture is the refinement of faith by the cultivation of our hearts through prayer. I continue to pray from a grateful heart.

Celebrating Fall

Fall weather encourages the smells of homemade soup on the stove, and vibrant colors of orange, yellow and red scattered about by the trees. The change in weather assures me that Thanksgiving and Christmas are soon to come. In a few days, many will celebrate Halloween, instead I choose to express my gratitude to children for the joy they share with me when they come to my front door. Each of their Paper Lunch Sacks will contain two Dole Fruit bowl snacks and one fruit punch PLUS one shiny penny. I also included a note to highlight that above President Lincoln’s head, if they look closely they will find the phrase “In God we trust”. It is there to remind us that all great things come from God above. Have a wonderful evening!

Growing a sanctuary

Echinacea Translates: Resilience, Strength, Healing Native tribes historically used echinacea to cure everything from toothaches to snakebite; today it stands as a symbol of healing—a natural guardian of the respiratory tract and immune system. It has been said that “…in a world brimming with stress and uncertainty, cultivating Echinacea in your garden is like growing a personal wellness sanctuary.” And I agree.
